Miss Pu is the woman who guided Spectrum to the four clubs. She is a 38-year-old single businesswoman who has been taking men out from various clubs for the past three years.

How did you learn about these clubs?
I once heard that there was a club in Japan where handsome guys come to entertain women, but I didn't know they are also in Thailand until I heard about it from a friend. I was interested and we went there together. At that time these places were exclusively for women, but now many things have changed and they allow gay men to enter as well. Mr Suporn said that the men who apply to work there are carefully screened. ''He tried hard to get men to our table and said: 'If you both are shy, I will arrange for you to pick up the guy outside','' said a researcher.
''Obviously, this is the bottom line of every club - to have as many drinks as possible, pay the bar fine and take the men out. All the clubs we went to are making money, maybe that's why they keep a low profile and don't advertise.''

One of the most popular and exclusive women's only clubs is located on the 18th floor of an office tower on Asoke Road. The club has no name and they don't advertise or give out name cards.
There's no show, only a dance floor. The male escorts are handsome and well-groomed and wear a suit and tie. The place is packed every night after 2am, especially at weekends, when it closes about 5am.
The decorations and furnishing are luxurious. The taped music is also very loud and there is a large video screen. Again, taking photos is strictly prohibited and trying to do so will get you thrown out.
''Most of the customers are between 20 and 30, but someappeared to be close to 50,'' a researcher said. ''We saw some young and beautiful women there being entertained by men. Only hi-so women go there because it is very expensive.
''The club has been open for about four years and is well known to many rich and famous women. Hosts entertain customers by dancing, playing games and talking. There's no touching, but kissing is permitted.
''The security guards downstairs tell you where to park your car, how to get in, and if you are there for the first time, he will point out the elevator to the 18th floor. Then you have to walk up some steps before getting inside the actual club.
''We saw many customers arriving after 2am. There were Thai women and some from Japan, Korea and Singapore. All were well dressed and attractive, including some Thai models and show girls.''
If you are interested in a man you have to talk to the manager. Initially the cost is 600 baht for two drinks, and after that 300 baht a drink. The club deducts 40 baht from the drink and the rest goes to the escort. Some drinks costmorethan 1,000 baht each, making the club out of reach for most women.
The club employs about 40 men, some who claim to be university students. They entertain women by playing drinking games at the table, talking and dancing. However, they treat the customers like they are their girlfriends. There are no shows.
''The men we sat with didn't openly offer sex. However, if you want to take a man for whatever purpose, the bar fine is 1,500 baht. As for sex, thewomanhas to discuss the price with the man. It has nothing to do with the club. They don't want to know,'' oneresearcher said.
''Mr Toy, the club's manager, said some menwhoused to work therenowhavewomen looking after them who pay them salaries and cover their rent and other expenses''.

There are more than 10 clubs around Bangkok where women can hire male escorts. However, some of these also service gay men, which is a growing trend. One such club is located in a narrow lane off Surawong Road near Patpong.
Regarded as a low-class venue, the club employs about 40menwhopose, go-go dance in bikinis and also perform in erotic shows.
The club consists of about 30 tables with a stage in the middle fitted out with colourful reflectors above. The lights are dimmed during sex shows and often it's hard to talk above the din of blaring music.
The staff, including waiters, are pushy, constantly offeringmento sit with the clients so drinks can be ordered; 300 baht for an alcoholic beverage and 240 baht for a soft drink.
The club is popular with both Thai and Asian women, especially Japanese, who are the most frequent guests. Most of those Spectrum spoke to said they were married, but bored with their husbands who were usually tired after work and neglected them.
The men for hire at the club ranged in age from 16 to their late thirties, with most coming from the Northeast of Thailand. Many had tattoos and only a few could converse in English. They frequently exposed their genitals - some wearing a condom - whether on the stage or approaching female customers at a table.
Shortly after entering the club, Spectrum was approached by an apparently gay manager who introduced himself as Mr Kai. He tried to introduce the team to several men who came to the table exposing their genitals. To justify their visit and make an excuse for going there, the researchers said they had come to find out if it was possible to hire a man for their foreign friend who is very shy and didn't want to visit the club.
''If she is shy and doesn't want to come here then just let her call me and I will give her a description of the man - like his age, colour of his skin and size of his penis,'' said Mr Kai. ''He can meet her anywhere she wants.''
The manager said European women like to go out with dark-skinned men, of whom there are plenty in the club, while Asianwomen prefer light-skinned men, whom he can also supply.
He then gave the researchers the club's card name with his mobile number on the back.
''After Mr Kai left us, a number of men who had earlier posed on the stage making eye contact with us came to our table one by one, trying to get our attention by wearing only a condom-to our disgust and embarrassment,'' one of the researchers said.
''Most of them said: 'Do you want me? I'd like to go with you. I can do everything for you.' They even tried to grab our hands. I gave them 100 baht each just to make them go away,'' another researcher said. Some customers in the club were bar girls who came after finishing work in Patpong to pick up a man.
To take a man out, a 400 baht bar fee is paid to the club and 1,500 baht to the escort for ''short-time'' sex.
The staff watch the customers closely and it is almost impossible to take a photo. When one researcher showed her mobile phone, pretending to send a text message, she was immediately approached by a waiter who said: ''No photos. Thank you.''

The sex-for-sale industry has been largely tolerated as part of the nightlife scene in Thailand since the 1960s when American servicemen made a beeline to Bangkok for "rest and recuperation".

However, many are not aware that similar sex services are available for women - both local and foreign - in a handful of discreet clubs around the city.
They range from hi-so clubs employing handsome, well-educated, well-dressed male escorts, to low-rent establishments where strapping young go-go boys dance in bikini bottoms and sometimes expose themselves in an explicit manner which leaves little to the imagination.
Using four undercover researchers posing as customers, Spectrum recently visited four clubs to gain an insight into the world of male prostitutes and the female customers who appeared more than happy to pay for their company. It was an unnerving assignment for the female researchers as security at the clubs was strict and management in every establishment was suspicious of new customers. There was a strict "no photograph" policy which led to some delicate situations when security staff became agitated at attempts to take pictures.
The researchers were also intimidated by the waiters and security staff, who insisted that they continue ordering high-priced drinks and "bar fine" a boy. They were also badgered to stay and buy more drinks when they tried to leave.
Despite this, many of the women Spectrum spoke to said they enjoyed the experience and were happy to pay for the attention lavished on them by the young men, adding that if it was alright for their husbands to have minor wives, they should feel no guilt or shame.
Some of the escorts and managers Spectrum interviewed at the up-market club said their customers included powerful and wealthy Thai women, one a well-known singer, as well as many rich foreigners, with the majority from Japan.

Several projects worth more than Bt10 billion each are under construction or on drawing boards in popular locations including Asoke, Phetchaburi, Rajprarop and Makkasan, at the city end of the link.

   Property developers began launching residential projects around the Airport Link when its construction began two years ago. Among the early projects were The Complete Rajprarop by Prinsiri, which is worth Bt1 billion and offers 547 units; Ideo Verb Rajprarop by Ananda Development, which offers 447 units and has a market value of Bt1.5 billion; and Chiwathai Rajprarop, which has 329 units and a value of Bt1.3 billion.
   The Fragrant Property Group launched a condominium project, The Circle, last year. With a market value of Bt4 billion, 90 per cent of its 901 units have already been sold.
   My Resort by Equity Residential, which launched pre-sales in 2008 and will be completed this year, is offering more than 200 units on Phetchaburi Rd and a 400-unit condominium called True Thonglor, developed by Pool Asset.
   Asian Property Development introduced its latest luxury condominium, the Address Asoke-Phetchaburi, last year. With a market value of Bt3.3 billion, it offers 574 units at a starting price of Bt5.23 million per unit.
   TCC Capital Land, a joint venture between Singaporean-based CapitaLand and TCC Land, which is owned by beverage tycoon Charoen Sirivadhanabhakdi, launched Villa Asoke, with a market value of Bt3 billion, last year.
   Alan Lin, CEO of real estate firm Harrison, said the area around the Airport Rail Link was a new focal point for property developers because of the convenient transportation offered by the rail service.
   The company is negotiating management deals with developers who own four land plots near the Airport Link, and plans to launch residential projects worth nearly Bt5 billion next year, he said.
   "We believe that this location will continue to be popular through 2010. More than five projects are currently being planned that will offer a total of 4,400 units between now and 2011," he said.
   Condominium units in the area have starting prices between Bt75,000 and Bt150,000 a square metre.
   Asian Property Development's managing director Pichet Vipavasuphakorn said his company had launched The Address Asoke-Phetchaburi because the location would become a new destination for homebuyers when the Airport Link was complete and there was easy transportation in the area.
   Land prices in the area also remain lower than those in the Sukhumvit, Sathorn and Silom areas. Homebuyers around the Airport Link will be offered new condominium units at lower prices than those in the inner central business district, although the inner CBD will be within easy reach, he said.
   TCC Capital Land chief executive Soammaphat Traisorat said that after introducing Villa Asoke to the market earlier this month, a number of customers had shown enough interest to visit the project. As a result, the company believes that when bookings open this weekend, there will be positive feedback from customers.
   "We believe that this area will be the new destination for residential development after the Airport Link starts operations," he said.
   Agency for Real Estate Affairs managing director Wasan Kongchan said demand for residences around mass transit systems continued to grow despite the economic downturn, adding that the behaviour of many homebuyers has changed away from single detached houses to condominiums because of last year's spike in fuel prices.
   "We believe this is a good time to buy a residence around the Airport Rail Link, before land and condominium prices in the area begin to rise," he said.
   Wasan said that when the Airport Rail Link began full operations, nearby land and residential prices would rise 10-20 per cent, depending on supply in the market.
   Airport Link plans to begin full operations at the end of this year.

A small downtown boutique offers an attraction collection of unique and unusual fashion and jewellery designs.

Two sisters with a penchant for all things sparkly recently opened their new boutique at the community mall K-Village on Sukhumvit Soi 26 and already they're attracting fashionistas with an eye for something different.
"We called our boutique Kirameki, which in our mother's language, means sparkly things," says Patrawadee Wongwasin, the older of the two half-Japanese, half-Thai sibs. Neeranuj, or Nuj as she's affectionately known to friends and family, a graduate in fashion design from Chulalongkorn University, is responsible for the intricately designed jewellery and clothes for sale in the shop.
"It really started as a hobby, I made some accessories for myself. Friends liked what I wore and word spread around about my designs," says Nuj modestly.
Her hobby quickly became a career, as more and more friends ordered her accessories. One of her clients worked for trendy boutique Soda in Siam Centre and before long Nuj was making accessories for Soda too. The feedback was good and Nuj has now completed three entire collections for the store.
"I always wanted to be a fashion designer. As a kid, I used to design dresses for my dolls. I learned how to make accessories by myself. When I went shopping with my mother to Sampeng market, I'd always ask her to stop by the bead shops," Nuj says.
Big sister Pat graduated from England with degrees in finance and risk management.
"In the beginning I wanted to import brand name cosmetics so I worked with the Mall Group for three years. I'm putting that experience to good use now by looking after the management and marketing at Kirameki," she says.
The boutique offers stylish blouses, pants, dresses, skirts, shorts and shirts along with a jewellery corner featuring rings, earrings, necklaces and shoes. The summer collection has a tribal theme that focuses on bright colours and is made primarily from wooden beads and feathers.
"When I design something, I search for the materials first. Then I rearrange them in different ways until I have an image in my head of how I want the piece to look," says Nuj.
Each design is limited to no more than five pieces, with the emphasis on quality. All are handmade from scratch in the shop. "It's all about experimenting," says Nuj.
Kirameki also offers limited collections from Korea and Hong Kong.
"We want our items to be unique, something that customers won't find elsewhere.
In the future, Kirameki hopes to rely less on imports but for now, Nuj is its only designer, both for the clothes and the accessories.
A new collection will soon be available. Inspired by impressionist school of art, the new designs will focus on colours and flowery patterns, showing summer's softer side.

The Performing Arts

Although the large shopping malls and international hotels often sponsor a cultural show, most travelers experience the Thai classical performing arts at a commercially staged dance show accompanying a Thai banquet; several hotels and restaurants offer this program. Generally there's a fixed-menu dinner of Thai favorites accompanied by a small orchestra, followed by a dance performance. Combined, you won't get the best food or the best dance.

For a different experience, visit the Erawan Shrine, at the corner of Ratchadamri and Ploenchit roads (near the Grand Hyatt Erawan Bangkok and Sogo Department Store). In front of the large, white marble altar to Brahma, the Hindu god of creation you'll often find musicians and beautifully costumed dancers commissioned to amuse Brahma by a grateful or hopeful worshiper.

The Joe Louis Theater, located in the Suan Lum Night Market (adjacent to Lumpini Park) holds nightly puppet theater performances of stories from the Ramakien as well as comic vignettes of rural Thai life. Complex puppets are manipulated by up to three puppet masters and the theater is also a training facility for Thai kids interested in the ancient art. Shows are nightly at 7:30 and 8:30pm. Tickets start at just 250B ($6). Located at the Suan Lum Night Market along Rama IV Road (tel. 02252-9683).

The Club & Bar Scene

Bangkok is huge, and there are nighttime adventures to be found down any soi in the town. If you'd just like to unwind with an evening cocktail, check out what's happening at your hotel's lobby bar; many set up jazzy live music to entertain folks. For the best lobby bar atmosphere head for the Bamboo Bar at the Oriental Hotel (Oriental Lane off Charoen Krung Rd.; tel. 02236-0400), with classy live jazz -- some of the best in the city. For the infamous Bangkok sex show scene, check out "Patpong" below. Bars and discos are all over the city and the main areas are listed below, but small nightclubs pop-up here and there around town (and many disappear just as quickly). If you're looking for Bangkok's gay scene, start at Silom Soi 4.

Silom Road & Patpong--Most visitors won't leave Bangkok without a stroll around Patpong, the famous sex strip and Night Market with myriad streetside market vendors and blocks of bars and clubs. The Patpong scene centers around Soi Patpong 1 and Soi Patpong 2 between Surawong and Silom roads. It's the home of Bangkok's raunchier sex shows, but even if you're not exactly after any risqué entertainment, most visitors come to wander the Market area (lots of knock-off goods and pirate recordings), at least just peak in the doors of the go-go dens and hit a casual bar or club. It's a good little wander, but be prepared for big crowds and beware of pickpockets.

Siam Square

--Siam Square, on Rama I Road between Henri Dunant Road and Phayathai Road, houses quite a few popular joints. Here's where you'll find Bangkok's Hard Rock Café, featuring good live bands, 424/3-6 Siam Square Soi 11 (tel. 02254-0830). At the Hartmannsdorfer Brauhaus, 2nd floor, Siam Discovery Center, Rama I Road (tel. 02658-0223), you'll find home brews in a nice atmosphere -- with special beer discounts on Sundays.

The area around Siam Square has become the undisputed center for shopping in Bangkok. It stretches for a km or two from MBK-Center in the West to Central Chidlom in the East. Most, but not all, shopping malls and department stores are close the the skytrain stations of Siam Square and Chitlom.

Sukhumvit Road--One of the most happenin' areas of Bangkok, the small sois along busy Sukhumvit play host to a wide range of bars as well as Bangkoks top clubs. You can hop the skytrain from one to the next or, after midnight when the skytrain stops, hop a tuk-tuk or taxi.
